What Does This Image Invoke in You?

What Does This Image Invoke in You?

One night I found myself working very late (until 5am) on images in my photography library. I was a photographer for 40+ years and these Images are photographs I have taken over that span but did not keep them in an easy to find file system. I wanted to fix that

I ran across one photograph I took back in 2004 in San Diego at the military cemetery at Point Loma. Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is on a bluff overlooking the harbor. Every time Monica and I visit San Diego we go there. For some reason the place draws me like nothing else. I was never in the military, but this place spoke volumes about the men and women that have served in our armed forces.

I have always wanted to take a photograph that would do justice to the peacefulness and beauty of its location but more importantly what it represents. I had forgotten about my images of that place until now. After studying this photograph, I decided to use a photographic technique called High Dynamic Range (HDR).

When I applied it to this image the result was totally unexpected. All I could do was stare at it. As I began to adjust the controls to tweak the image further I found myself being drawn into it like no other photograph I have ever done before. I found myself going back to it over and over as I worked on other images throughout the night.

Does This Photograph Say Anything to You?

This photograph was taken at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Lomas in San Diego. Its is a Photoshop technique called a high dynamic range. It combines three identical images with one over exposed, one under exposed and one exposed just right.

Memorial Day Photo Story

I found myself crying and a number of occasions. Why I asked myself? What is it about this image?

When you go to the location itself you are immediately over whelmed by the size and scope of the place and sheer numbers of grave markers. On more than one occasion I have found myself walking among the markers and reading the small short story of that person’s life.

I try to imagine what their life was all about and who they were. Not all that are buried there died in combat, but a great many did. What does that say to me? So very many!

Many more cemeteries like this one dot our country and different locations in the world. What price did they pay?

As I think about that, I think about the condition of our country today and what they would think? Would they say it was worth it? I am sad today because of the scope of the question and their ultimate sacrifice.

This is a B&W infrared image that I took with a DSLR camera that was converted to shoot only infrared photographs.

It does not matter if you are Republican or Democrat. Liberal or conservative or any shade in between. The real question is what we have become as a nation at this moment in time. Who are we and where are we going. What does the future bring as I look out over the past of this photograph?

Only God knows. This all is not a surprise to him. That, I take much comfort in.

Text Plus Photo Equals Powerful Visual Story

Text Plus Photo Equals Powerful Visual Story

One of the most satisfying things I do as a graphic artist is design small visual blurbs that combine a photograph or graphics with text. It is like a neat little visual package that can convey a message like nothing else can.

They can be very powerful with its message and does not take much time to get its point across to the viewer. People do not have a lot of patience to read a lot anymore because of how much information we all have to digest on a daily basses.

These little visual blurbs are perfect.

Do not take me wrong. I still love designing websites, newsletters and writing blogs like this one but there is something about these little morsels of graphic design that is on a different independent level.

They are much harder than they look.

This is a selfe I took of me, my son and grandson. Cell phones do a great job of capturing images for these graphics. I used a filter on the image in Photoshop to blur the photo and give it a different feel to warm it up to match the quote and red text.

Many times I use a photograph that I took sometime in the past. I was a photographer for more than 40 years so had built up a library of images that I can use but more often than not, I use a great image from a photostock agency.

Sometimes, my inspiration will come from a photograph itself and then look for a quote, or I might just save that image until I run across something suitable to match. Other times, I find a great quote or even scripture and then hunt for just the right image.

I love this hunting phase because it takes me on a journey of discovery within my own self.

When it comes to the text, the quote is a big deal but so is the type of font that is being used. Do I use something modern (san serif) or something more gothic or traditional (sarif).

Fonts also tell a story and will either help the story line or make it less effective. This is where my graphic arts schooling has come in handy.

Color combinations are also very important and how they relate to one another. Element placement can also make or break the message.

A selfe my son took of him and his son so I could use it for this graphic.

I use a number of different software programs that Adobe makes. For these little blurbs I use both Photoshop and Illustrator.

I use Photoshop to get the image just right and Illustrator to use text and fonts in very creative ways.

Small, compact and full of zip is what these blurbs are and perfect for social media messages.

Family History Cell Phone Style

I love that little gadget in my pocket called a cell phone. The built in camera takes some remarkable images in the hands of a trained eye. Lightweight and always ready it is.

As I have gotten older and somewhat disabled, hauling out heavy camera gear is no longer an option. This little guy does just fine thank you very much. I also love the fact that I can down load the images and make adjustments in Photoshop.

Life in photo world is still very good and I might add, alive and clicking.

Look carefully and you will see the label is upside down. That was how it came from the store.

A short time ago our family had a small reunion of sorts.

Family members that had not seen each other all together in a very long time.

It was time for me to do what I have always done and once again become the family historian.

I know it was only for a couple of hours that went by way to fast but hopefully I was able to capture a few slivers of time worth remembering.

It was like herding cats to get everyone into place for the traditional family photo. I had lots of help.

Here is to my sister, her husband, their son and his wife along with their 2 precious children.

My wife, my three son’s and my seven grandchildren all enjoyed the time to catch up and to also meet new relatives they had never meet before.

Seeing is believing…
