Things to Know When Writing and Publishing a Blog

What I want to cover here on this article is how to write and publish a blog from SEO, grammar, image, and technical aspects on a WordPress website or blog.

Writing blogs is a bit different than regular writing in the fact that most things are read on a small mobile device so smaller chunks are easier to read.

More on that below.

I install a theme on all my WordPress websites that are known as mobile-responsive which means that all pages and blogs will show up very well and readable on mobile devices like cell phones and iPads as well as larger devices.

Your articles will go from a horizontal view that you would see on laptops and desktops and the switch to vertical view for smaller cell phones and iPads.

The theme on the WordPress website should make the transition between the two very well automatically and seamlessly if it is mobile-responsive. If not, you will need another theme.

I use what is known as a premium theme that costs extra instead of a free one because they have worked out the issues with mobile-responsive but supplies you with great page builders and other extras that are worth the investment.

Writing

I recommend typing out your blog on a Word document. It is very easy to just copy and paste right into a WordPress website. Other website platforms may work just as easy.

Make sure your grammar is the best it can be by having a second set of eyes look over what you have written. You want to put your best foot forward and do not want to turn off people with bad grammar.

Something that I found that is very helpful is by reading out-loud what you have typed out. For some reason, it seems to help pick out mistakes in grammar and sentence structure.

Use a FREE grammar assistant app called Grammerly. It works great and cleans up my mistakes and gives me many choices in the correction process. It’s fast and easy to use.

From Google’s standpoint…

…blogs should be at least 300 words or more. More the better. Sometimes I write short articles around 300-500 words but many times I write them over 1,000 words. It always depends on the topic. To give you an idea, this blog post that you are reading right here is over 1,400 words.

To promote your business or organization, you may want to post something at least once a week at the beginning of the life of your website. This helps with the SEO of the site but also you gain traction on social media and start building a following.

Sometimes if I have written out an usually long blog of lets say, 3,000 words, I will make it a part 1 and a part 2 that will be published a week or two apart. I may write up and publish Part 1 and then need time to think and write up Part 2 a week or two later. It hard to keep the attention of your reader with super long blog post unless its a how-to article and you are trying to teach people how to do something.

You want to published regularly depending what type of business or organization you are. They say that publishing 2-4 times per week provides the highest results in both traffic and conversions. I do not blog that much because of all the other work I do and blogging can take time in research and writing out the articles but I do understand the importance of blogging and reaching new clients.

To read more information on blogging frequency go here to Content Marketing. or LeadG2.

Write in Smaller Chunks

Most of the time good prose should be written in longer paragraphs but not so with blog articles. Go ahead and write your article like you normally would do and then go back and break up the paragraphs into small one or two-sentence bites.

They are then much easier to read on a mobile device and it gives you a chance to add header tags (H1, H2, H3) which are important for SEO. More on that below.

What is SEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) how search engines help people find things. When people type in things on a search engine like Chrome, Firefox or Safari that are connected to Google, Bing or Yahoo it will understand what is being asked and then it knows where to find it.

Install a free tool or plugin on your WordPress websites called Yoast SEO that will allow you to add important information for search engines.

Several things help the search engines find your blog are the focus key phrase, title tag and meta description that are inserted into Yoast and then you add different header tags into the blog itself.

Yoast is pretty cool because it also keeps track of all these different parts to make sure everything is like it should be for search engines by using different color-coded symbols to let you know where you stand on each element and what needs to be fixed.

Focus Key Phrase

This is the all-important key phrase. These words contain what your article is all about. You can have only one keyphrase, so you want to be creative here. This should also correspond to the title of the articles.

Title Tag or SEO Title

Your focus key phrase should go in the first part of the tag. Then you have the option of putting different elements after that. I usually put the website name and if there is enough room something else. Remember you should not use more than 68 caricatures, or the title will not display properly in the search.

Directly below is how I made this SEO title for this blog.

Things to Know When Publishing a Blog | WordPress | SEO

Slug

This is the key phrase that will go into the URL. Make these lower case with a hyphen between each word. Yoast will take care of this for you when you tell it what the key phrase is.

And then what it looks like in the URL

Meta Description

This is the area that you can put a short excerpt about what your blog is all about. You will want to put the title at the front and then more info to make people want to read what you have written. You can consider this your advertising for the blog. Remember you can not use more than 140 caricatures, or the description will not display properly in the search.

Directly below is how I made a Meta Description for this blog.

“Things to Know When Writing and Publishing a Blog” using WordPress. Covering All aspects. Article size, words, photography, SEO, Google Console, eMail and publishing.

All together it should look like this from the Yoast plugin tool:

Photography

Photos are a big deal on a blog. It helps to break up the article and keep people focused.

You need one for the featured image.

This image will display at the top of your blog and then it will follow your blog wherever you decide to post it on your social media posts, and it will also show up when you automatically send out emails.

I make this image a little larger than I do the other images that will go in the blog itself because it has to fit across the top of the blog and you want it to come out nice and sharp. I make these 9×5 at 96 dpi

Rule of Thumb…

…on how many photos to use on a blog depends on how many words are in the blog itself. I try to use one image for every 400 words.

400-word blog I will use just the featured image. Thats the image that goes across the top and install that on the outside of the blog itself on the right hand side.

800-word blog. I will count the featured image along with one extra image to go inside the blog post itself.

1,200-word blog. I will count the featured image along with two extra images.

I make these photos that will go inside the blog: 7×5″ at 72 dpi. You never want your images to be too large in size and dpi any larger than 72 dpi unless it’s your featured image because large images will slow down your website.

The featured image I make 9×5″ at 96 dpi.

I also have used a free plugin that shrinks down images even further that helps your website pages and blogs open faster called Smush.

You can also find the Yoast and Smush plugins in the plugin section of your WordPress website.

I wrote a blog you may want to read on How to Optimize Images for Faster Website Speed.

In Conclusion

This is more or less a compressive list of things to do to make your blog stand out and to be found on search engines. You may find there are other helpful things along the way that will make your blog work more efficiently to add to this list.

Another blog I wrote that may be helpful 8 Benefits Blogging From Your Business Website

The internet and websites are always evolving and new practices are added all the time. Google is certainly changing how it looks with up-dates to its algorithms and how it crawls websites and blogs for relevant information.

What does this image invoke in you?

I found myself working very late last night (until 5am) on images for my new stock photo agency. Images that I have taken over the years. I ran across one photograph I took back in 2004 in San Diego at the military cemetery on the bluff overlooking the harbor. Every time Monica and I visit San Diego we go there. For some reason the place draws me like nothing else. I was never in the military. I have had controversial views about our country and its role in the world but that is all beside the point.

I have always wanted to take a photograph that would do justice to the peacefulness and beauty of its location but more importantly what it represents. I had forgotten about my images of that place until now. After studying this photograph I decided to use a photographic technique called HDR. I then applied it to this image.

The result was totally unexpected. All I could do was stare at it. As I began to adjust the controls to tweak the image further I found myself being drawn into it like no other photograph I have ever done before. I found myself going back to it over and over as I worked on other images throughout the night.

The first color photo was taken using High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography to bring out the colors and high lights.

I found myself crying and a number of occasions. Why I asked myself? What is it about this image? When you go to the location itself your are immediately over whelmed by the size and scope of the place and sheer numbers of grave markers.

On more than one occasion I have found myself walking among the markers and reading the small short story of that person’s life. I try to imagine what their life was all about and who they were.

Not all that are buried there died in combat but a great many did. What does that say to me? So very many!

Saluting the United States Military on Memorial Day with Two Photographs

The second B&W photograph was taken with a digital camera that was set to shoot infrared.

Many more cemeteries like this one dot our country and different locations in the world. So many! What price did they pay? As I think about that, I think about the condition of our country today and what they would think? Would they say it was worth it?

I am sad today because of the scope of the question and their ultimate sacrifice. It does not matter if you are Republican or Democrat. Liberal or conservative or any shade in between. The real question is what have we become as a nation at this moment in time. Who are we and where are we going. What does the future bring as I look out over the past of this photograph?

Only God knows. This all is not a surprise to him. That, I take much comfort in.

What do these image invoke in you?

.

Both photographs were taken at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego on the same day in 2004.

Idesign websites for individual people, organizations and companies. One of the things I tell people is you can have the best-looking website on the internet but if you are not attracting new people to it then what’s the point. The whole idea is to bring in new prospective clients or viewers.

How do you do this? Two main ways. Digital marketing and SEO. This article is how to use digital marketing in the form of one particular social media called YouTube. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube are all different types and each one of those social media platforms have their own unique way of attracting new followers.

I try to guide people on what social media might be best for their business and I try not to limit their options because each one has their own following. Many times, I recommend that they try three or four different ones.

YouTube is in a class by itself and one social media that I wanted to know more about… only it’s not really a social media in the traditional sense. It is really a search engine that lets people use videos to help promote their businesses or idea’s.

I have a friend by the name of Sheri that teaches people how to use this amazing platform and she invited me and about 100 people to spend a Saturday in January with her at something called a YouTube Bootcamp.

A Rose Is Still A Rose No Matter How You Photograph It

A Rose Is Still A Rose No Matter How You Photograph It

“O wow! We gotta stop.”

My wife sounded the alarm as we were driving on a very wet and cloudy spring day. We had just passed the rose garden at Mesa Community College. The colors were just bursting out and jumping out onto to the road that made us stare in disbelief as we whizzed by.

“Pull over or we are going to hit someone.” She cried out again.

“We do not have any of our camera gear with us,” I said, as we pulled into the parking lot next to the garden. Waiting for the down pour of rain to stop we planned our next course of action as we viewed this amazing site from the car window.

A Rose Is Still A Rose No Matter How You Photograph It

Everything was perfect. Cloudy overcast day with rain is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to photographing flowers. Those days are rare in the deserts of Arizona let me tell you.

My wife and I have been professional photographers for many years, so we know what it takes to capturing great looking images in many different elements.

We decided to have some fun and take our time dodging rain drops and just use our cell phones. We both have been wanting to experiment with the built-in camera on our iPhone’s.

It was cool out and rain drops were on all the roses and best of all we had very diffused lighting because of the cloud cover. The light was very even and gives a delicate feel to whatever you photograph.

No one else was in the garden because of the rain so we had the whole place to ourselves. When it got heavy we would get back in the car and marvel over the images we just took (isn’t digital just grand) and, when the rain let up, out we would go again.

This cat mouse game with the elements lasted for a couple of hours. We did not want to stop and would squeal back and forth to each other at the next colorful rose we each just discovered.

I am a photographer at heart but I am also a graphic artist. I love taking images and combining them with text to tell a more complete visual story. These are small packets that infuse a couple of human senses at once.

When we arrived home…

…that late afternoon we were both tired but happy campers. One thing I have always loved about photographing in the elements was that it gave us an excuse to get back outdoors and explore God’s creation.

Capturing a little sliver of time on this planet so we can revisit it over and over again is precious to us both.

And of course, the most beautiful rose of them all is my wife. She is my life partner, fellow world explorer through our love of photography and most of all, seeker of the truth in God and Jesus.

Reinventing Myself Through Graphic Design

Reinventing Myself Through Graphic Design

Reinventing Myself Through Graphic Design

I was a professional photographer for 40+ years when I became disabled with a hip replacement that went south. I no longer had the mobility I once had so going back to school for graphic design was the next logical choice.

The same layout and placement of elements is very similar in many ways. Now, I design behind a big computer screen instead of a small digital computer called a camera.

I also have found the graphic art principles also apply to designing websites.

Finding Myself Through Graphic Design

I always admired the people in the graphic arts field because I saw the result of what they did swirling all around me in the world.

From labels on boxes to ads on TV, printed flyers to movie credits.

The ordinary street and store front signs and deep into the internet world of websites, social media, graphic design is all around us.

Learning new software was the biggest obstacle when I first started graphic art school. It was a struggle at first because computers were not my strong point. I was very old school in many ways.

I had learned photography back in 1969 in high school using a 35mm camera and developing B&W film, and printing images in a darkroom the old-fashioned way. I was very hands on in a manual sort of way, like many people from my generation that started before computers came on the scene.

I think back on those computer and software struggles and it’s hard for me think of me having a hard time with them because I live and breathe with them now.

.

Finding Myself Through Graphic Design

Graphic Art is Good Therapy

.

Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign

They are the three big engines that drive graphic design and are all made by Adobe. All very different from each other but, also very similar in many ways.

A.) Photoshop, to work on images and photographs to make them the best that they can be through cropping and image manipulation.

B.) Illustrator, to design individual pieces as in logo’s, individual flyers, ad’s or even adding text to images as a visual graphic for social media.

C.) InDesign, the software that designs multi-page newsletters, magazines or PDF’s for print and digital distribution. I will, many times make a main template for an organization that will be used for future designs with this program. InDesign is the hardest to learn because it can do so many different things on many different levels all at once so my schooling in this program was well worth it.

After I started school I realized website design would become part of this mix. My graphic art skills would be used to make websites look great in addition to functioning as they should.

The Software Design Process

I use Photoshop and Illustrator to design specific pieces, then bring them all together in to InDesign for a multi-page book or newsletter layout.

All the programs by Adobe play together extremely well and let me cross platform to each other easily and efficiently.

Drop and drag is the name of that game when work with them all at the same time.

That is the benefit of having three software programs that are made by the same company.

Learning Graphic Design

Learning Graphic Design

Many times, I will have all three open at the same time on three different computer monitors so I can be as efficient as possible. When working on a website I will have both Photoshop and Illustrator open with InDesign being the odd man out because WordPress is taking the place of InDesign as digital layout software.

I enjoy and love what I do now because it’s like using different elements of the same puzzle when I am in the designing mode. Graphic art and website design is a combination that allows me to branch out creatively in a couple different directions when the need arises.

I also like the fact that I help people, companies, churches, nonprofits and different organizations grow and become more successful at what they do with my creative skills.

This really is my idea of having fun.
